NXT Recap 9-16: Bayley’s Homecoming

Last week I won two free tickets to the NXT Tapings for September. My wife and I left work early, put on our SAWFT and Bayley gear and made our way from Tampa to Winter Park. Even though we got there a few minutes before the tapings started we got pretty sweet seats.

Last night’s NXT was the first episode of the tapings we attended. I tried to find us on camera, but no luck. Even though I saw the matches already it was interesting to watch them back on the Network and see how they edited the matches and what promo videos they added in. Here is a quick recap of this week’s episode with my thoughts.

Opening Segment

The show opens with what is supposed to be a match between Tyler Breeze and Adam Rose, but Bull Dempsey interrupts and wants a match with Breeze. Rose refuses to leave, so Bull gets him out of the ring the hard way. Breeze and Bull had a little scuffle which ended with Breeze tucking his tail and heading for the hills. Next week we’ll see Breeze and Bull square off. I’ve become a real big fan of Bull Dempsey and Bull Fit. The NXT crowds love it too. There were several variations of Bull Fit chants. This is what Bull needed all along. They were trying to force him into being a monster heel when really he is a goofy guy. He seems to be having a lot of fun with Bull Fit as well. It seems like Breeze is stuck in awkward position. He’s had numerous title shots and has fueded with a majority of the NXT main eventers. Right now there is not a spot for Prince Pretty on the main roster. I think he deserves a NXT title run before he gets called up.

“Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger vs. Martin Stone

Next we had a match between the “Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger and Martin Stone. This was an enhancement match used to display Dillinger. Dillinger has always been solid in the ring, but he was missing a persona. The tag team with Jason Jordan just wasn’t working out it and seemed forced. The “Perfect 10” gimmick is the best thing to happen to Dillinger. This character can be either a babyface or a heel. In the coming weeks, I would like them to pick a direction for Dillinger and stick with it. I would prefer him go the heel route. Finn needs more challengers.

Apollo Crews vs. Solomon Crowe

The next match was between former Dragon Gate stars Apollo Crews and Solomon Crowe. I personally have never been a fan of Crowe. I’ve seen him on the indies before he came to NXT and I didn’t like him then and I don’t like him now. At the beginning of the match, it started out as friendly competition, but as the match went on Crowe started getting frustrated and became move aggressive. Despite increasing his intensity, Crowe was outmaneuvered by Crews. I think turning Crowe heel is a good move. He really has caught on as a babyface like the other indy stars and as I mentioned above Finn needs more challengers. Crews once again were outstanding. He is a star in the making.

Rhyno & Baron Corbin vs. Tomasso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano

The action continued with a second round match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Classic. The odd couple of Rhyno and Baron Corbin against indy superstar combination of Tomasso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano. Ciampa and Gargano picked up a surprise win over Bull and Breeze to advance to this match.  The NXT crowd wanted no part of Corbin. Anytime he was in the ring they chanted “we want Rhyno”! Ciampa and Gargano were impressive in their 2nd NXT outing. I was hoping to see them advance further in the tournament. Rhyno and Corbin out muscled the indy duo and sent them packing. I think the finals of the tournament will end up with Corbin and Rhyno facing off against Finn and Joe.

Bayley vs. Sarah Dobson

Bayley made her long-awaited return to the NXT arena as Women’s Champion. She took a celebratory lap and ran up and down all the sections of the arena, hugging and high-fiving fans. I lost my mind when she ran up our section and took the picture above. My wife was starstruck and couldn’t believe she was that close to Bayley. Bayley brought her biggest fan, Izzy, into the ring to celebrate with her. After the celebration, Bayley had a quick match with Sarah Dobson. Once Bayley picked up the victory it seemed like we were going to get a speech from Bayley but then the Boss’s music hit!

Poor Sarah had to sit on the floor during this segment. Sasha returned to NXT to challenge Bayley to a rematch for the Women’s Championship. Bayley proposed a 2 out of 3 Falls match, but that wasn’t good enough for Sasha. She said she wanted to beat Bayley over and over again. The crowd immediately started chanting “iron woman”! Then Regal came out to make it official. At the next Takeover on October 7th, Bayley and Sasha will main event in a 3o Minute Iron Woman match! This match is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see it!

Next week on NXT we’ll see the debut of Askua formerly known as Kana, Bull vs. Breeze, and an NXT Championship rematch between the Vaudevillians and Blake and Murphy.

What were your thoughts on this week’s NXT?
